His episcopal ordination is expected to take place in Gozo on September 4, 2015.
Fr. George was born on July 1, 1962, in Gozo, one of five brothers, sons of the late Emmanuel and Mary (Attard) Bugeja.
He entered the Franciscans as a postulant in 1976, and began his novitiate on October 2, 1977. He studied Literature and Franciscan Studies and then Philosophy and Theology. He also holds a diploma in journalism and spirituality.
He made Solemn Profession on August 28, 1983 and ordained a deacon on July 9, 1984. He was ordained priest on July 5, 1986.
During his pastoral ministry, he performed the following tasks: Tripoli, Libya (1987); St Paul's, Toronto, Canada (1987-1988); St. Francis, Hamrun (1988-1990); St. Anthony, Ghajnsielem (1990-1993); St. Mary of Jesus, Rabat, Malta (1993-1995); Porziuncola Retreat House, Bahar ic-Caghaq and in Padua Retreat House, Ghajnsielem (1995-1998); Retreat House Padua (1998-2002); St. Anthony, Ghajnsielem and Master of Novices and Students (2002-2004); Guardian and Parish Priest of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus , Sliema (2004-2008); Auditor in the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of the Diocese of Gozo and Ministry Formator in the Major Seminary of Gozo (2008-2010); an official of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (Propaganda Fidei), the Vatican City (March 2010-March 2015).
Since January 2015, Fr. George has been the Guardian of the Convent of St. Anthony, Ghajnsielem. Recently the Bishop of Gozo, Mgr. Mario Grech appointed him Delegate for Religious.
Within the Maltese Franciscan Province he was also editor of the edition TAU (1997-2005) and responsible for the Secretariat for Franciscan Missions (1995-2007).
Fr. George participated in the Franciscan Internship Program in Spiritual Direction and has a Diploma in Theology of Consecrated Life from the Institute of Theology of Consecrated Life Claretianum within Lateranensi Pontifical University of Rome (2011-2012).
