November 7, 2013--West Chester, OH—The Commission for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation of the English Speaking Conference and local Franciscan Action Network members delivered a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner’s local district office as a part of a Commission meeting. The letter specifically stated, “In the name of justice, we request you use all the tools of your office to pass immigration reform on the floor of the House of Representatives by the end of 2013.” It was delivered to Speaker Boehner’s West Chester, OH district office following a short prayer service. Unfortunately, neither the Speaker nor a representative from the Speaker’s office was available for a meeting.
Gino Correa, OFM, Provincial Minister of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Province from Albuquerque, NM and liaison to the Commission from the English Speaking Conference Provincial Ministers, shared, “Each day in our work, our hearts are broken by the way the current immigration system damages and destroys so many people and families. Our hope is that the letter to Speaker Boehner and the thousands of other calls to his office give him the strength to move immigration forward in the House of Representatives. Our immigrant brothers and sisters must not remain in the shadows.”
This latest letter to Speaker Boehner marks the newest action of the Franciscan Friars and their ministries in their work for immigration reform in alliance with the larger Franciscan family, the U.S. Bishops and many other advocates. The next push is a Catholic telephone call-in day to members of the House of Representatives that also will request the legislative action. The Catholic call-in day will take place next Wednesday, November 13, 2013, on the feast day of Saint Mother Cabrini, the patron saint of immigrants. For more details regarding the call-in please visit the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Justice for Immigrants web site (www.justiceforimmigrants.org).
In addition to the letter, the animators also brought copies of the friars prior letters to legislators on immigration reform. You can access all three letters here:
